Originally published by Arnaud Berquin in French as L'Ami des Enfants, divided into twenty-four monthly installments, The Children's Friend contains stories about children's ordinary lives. The stories proved incredibly popular and the compilation was translated into English, Italian, German, Marathi, Spanish, Danish, Polish, Russian, Gujarati, and Kapampangan from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries.
